Off grid, all our needs met, happy. That's where I'm headed, and you're welcome to come along.

I'm not an electrician or a solar salesman. I'm a regular homeowner who got tired of watching the lights flicker every storm and the power bill climb every year. So I started testing: what can a power station actually run, for how long, and what would it really take to leave the grid behind?

Here's how I do it:

• Real tests on camera. Real appliances, a watt meter on screen, and the full runtime, even when the answer is disappointing.
• Real homes. I visit local families who already run on solar and batteries and ask them what it cost, what broke, and whether they'd do it again.
• Honest numbers. The sizing tool and bill analyzer use the same math I use for my own plan.
